Why is this drug prescribed?

Cipro is an antibiotic used to eliminate the bacteria that cause a number of different infections, including urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and skin, bone and joint infections.

When should it be used?

Cipro is usually taken twice a day, for seven to 14 days or longer. Follow the instructions on your prescription label, and ask your pharmacist to explain any part that you do not understand. Cipro should be taken at least one hour before or two hours after meals.

How should it be used?

Cipro comes in tablets. Take this medication with a full glass of water on an empty stomach.

What special instructions should I follow while using this drug?

Take all the medication prescribed, even after you begin to feel better. Failure to do so could allow the infection to return.

What special dietary instructions should I follow while using this drug?

Drink at least eight full glasses of water or other liquids every day. Do not take antacids within four hours of taking Cipro. Avoid consuming large amounts of coffee, tea, and other caffeine-containing drinks or drugs (many over-the-counter drugs contain caffeine) while taking Cipro. Cipro can make you more susceptible to the nervousness, insomnia, palpitations and anxiety caused by excessive amounts of caffeine.
